PolySpeak

About

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) has started a project to slowly migrate its traditional telephony system to VOIP (Voice over IP). This project started in the last quarter of 2005 and has evolved to its current state. The system is based on OpenSource, but several add-on modules have been programmed in-house to permit the extension of features such as Billing, Statistics and Web management.

The system is based on the well known opensource software Asterisk, but several modules have been added to permit extended features. One of VoIPs strong points is saving money. Not only are calls cheaper, even some of them free, but also expensive maintance costs are thing of the past. LCR alogaritms created by us permit the system to search for the cheapest route to the destination, regardless if it uses the internet, a broker or even the traditional phone line. Using services as ENUM permit VoIP systems to comunicate with other system using the internet without any more costs.
